An ADSL link is shared with other ADSL customers, so your data competes with all data is statistically multiplexed across the network which means it averages the flow of data between users. Since it's unlikely that any user is using all the bandwidth all the time, on average everyone gets full use of the bandwidth for a certain time, and most of the applications used on the Internet tend to send or request data in bursts, these bursts are just slotted in amongst other bursts. However if everyone was trying to use all their bandwidth, then contention would come into play.
