Some companies will pay shareholders bonus dividends on occasion in addition to the regular distributions. Also called special dividends, the one-time payments come as an unexpected bonus to shareholders. In 2004, Microsoft, which has never paid a dividend, paid out a one-time $3 per share bonus dividend to all shareholders. Bonus dividends sound like a good idea, but there may be reasons paying one is not in the company's or investors' best interests.
