Kelime aslında Japoncadır (本性 şeklinde yazılır). Zen Budizminde kişinin/canlının tabiyatı, gerçek doğası anlamındadır. İngilizce kaynaklarda "true character" şeklinde açıklanabiliyor ancak honsei sonradan edinilen/şekillenen karakterden farklıdır, her insanın doğası/tabiyatı/hamurudur.
Araştırırken Konfiçyüsçü düşüncede de benzer bir kullanım olduğunu farkttim. Örnek:

Kelime aslında Japoncadır dedim ama, Japonların kanji karakterlerini (ve inançlarının temelini de) Çinlilerden aldıklarını da belirteyim. Yani honsei kelimesinin iki karakteri hon ve sei için kullanılan kanjiler Çinceden alınmıştır ve (muhtemelen) Çincede de benzer anlama geliyordur.
