Dear Shane Wall,

While in English a combination of two synonyms like these can emphasize the meaning, I think, unfortunately only this combination in Vietnamese cannot but also results in a strange expression.
The language bar is sometimes too intricate and hard to cross. Right? But the good thing is we, different language speakers, can be together hand in hand to cross it. Right?

I think you are correct. For me, as a 2nd Lg VI speaker, "Đại diện" means "representing" and "thay mặt" means "on behalf of". They are the same meaning and seem 'strange' when used together in VI ... but of course I am a native EN speaker so may not totally hiểu!



If I see "Đại diện" in a signature block, it is "Represented by". If I see "Thay mặt", it is "On behalf of". If I see them together, only then is it "For and on behalf of".



Could this be another example where a VI writer is use synonymic repetition for reinforcement of meaning?

Thank you all for your interesting responses.

However, far as I know, "đại diện" is just another Chinese version of "thay mặt". What I want to know is whether or not "for" and "on behalf of" means the same. If it is the case then we should choose either "thay mặt" or "đại diện", not both in a phrase as this would lead to an uncommon and ridiculous expression which if Googled for none will be found.

I think Shanewall has the best understanding of the English phrase. So particurlar thanks to Shanewall for your help. I will choose your suggestion but with the said modification.
