البته دختره نفهمید. یعنی انگلیسی آن مردکه را نفهمید. ناچار من برایش ترجمه کردم. آن وقت به جای این که جواب آن مرد را بدهد؛ در آمده رو به من که لابد بد اخلاق بوده‌ای یا هرزه بوده‌ای که شوهرت طلاقت داده. به همین صراحت. یعنی من برای این که تندی حرف آن مردکه را جبران کرده باشم و دختره را از تنهایی در آورده باشم؛ سر دلم را باز کردم و برایش گفتم که آمریکا بوده‌ام و بعد که برایش گفتم شوهرم چه کاره بود و به این علت ازش طلاق گرفتم، می‌دانید چه گفت؟ گفت این که عیب نشد. هیچ کاری عار نیست... لابد خانواده‌اش دست به سرت کرده‌اند که ارثش به بچه‌ات نرسد، یا لابد بداخلاق بوده‌ای و ازین حرف‌ها، اصلاً انگار نه انگار که تازه از راه رسیده. طلب‌کار هم بود. خوب، معلوم است. شوهرش نماینده‌ی مجلس بود. آخر اگر این خاک بر سرها نروند این لگوری‌ها را نگیرند که دختری مثل من، نمی‌رود خودش را به آب و آتش بزند...
