Finnish to English translations [PRO]
Business/Commerce (general) / personal characteristics / stereotype
Finnish term or phrase: hämäläisyys
A person has performed a SWOT analysis of herself. Under "threats" (Uhat) she has listed: "hiipivä hämäläisyys". Why is this something to be afraid of? The person is a savolainen.

I've checked this:
http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hämäläiset
but still don't see why it's a bad thing...

English translation:slowness typical of a native of Häme
Explanation:
...latent slowness (on the uptake) typical of a native of Häme

(it's a fallacy! I moved to Häme recently & find the people not at all slow! Typical stereotype)

being/coming from Häme

Explanation:
I agree with Erkki that this has to do with being slow and perhaps also rather serious; especially if she is from Savo, where people are stereotypically more extrovert and spontaneous.

agree  Tanja-Kristiina Noranta: I agree. Slowness, seriousness and a pessimistic outlook on life in general are considered stereotypical characteristics of the natives. I think she means she's worried about losing her Savo identity because Savo and Häme are sort of opposites here.

agree  MiaK: I'm from Häme, so I shouldn't be commenting before tomorrow... "Hiipivä hämäläisyys" also contains a reference to "hiipivä hulluus", I think.

agree  Timo Lehtilä: When translating into English, I think "latent slowness on the uptake" might be one of the best. The original is, of cource, stereotypic and joking.
