Finnish to English translations [PRO] Other / military, surveying, peat investigations, geology | | Finnish term or phrase: Käsisuuntakehä | This is word that occurs in a scientific report describing fieldwork on peat/bog/mire areas by Finnish geologists. It is an instrument used by the Finnish military at least since 1946. I think it is a some sort of “sighting compass (hand bearing compass)” but I am puzzled that the pictures I have found on the internet have 60 divisions (each is six degrees?).
My provisional translation is “military sighting compass”.
Can anyone confirm and/or explain further.

| | hand bearing compass | Explanation: "Hand bearing compass" seems to be the name used by well-known Finnish compass manufacturer Suunto.
In the Finnish artillery the full circle is traditionally divided into 6000 mils (heritage from Imperial Russia). At the moment shift into Nato 6400 mils is going on. |
