Tech/Engineering - Ships, Sailing, Maritime | | Finnish term or phrase: kylkisävy | does anybody know the exact word for this in English? I'm not even sure what it means. It's talking about the colours of a boat, and from what I can see from the picture in the reference material there's a half-metre wide dark stripe on the side of the boat, so I'm wondering whether the term refers to the stripe or the overall colour, and in either case, what would it be called?

'Sävy' actually means 'tone', but it is often used in the meaning of near to "overall impression" (vaikutelma).
Here the neologism 'kylkisävy' (as I interpret it) refers to the "overall impression given by striping and colour(-ton)ing of the boat side".

Receiving a respond from the asker inspired me to concentrate at the problem more profoundly. The passage “osittainen tumma kylkisävy” seemed firstly to be ungrammatical, it should be “osittain tumma kylkisävy”. But the author apparently wants to say e.g. “kyljen tummasävyinen osa” (the dark-coloured part of the side). Later on the text continues “…combined with golden-coloured stripe, gives even wealthy impression.”. That is to say, I was wrong, ‘kylkisävy’ here refers to the colour tone of the side and the grammatically slightly vague passage “osittainen tumma kylkisävy” refers to the dark-coloured part of the side. |

Asker: the text you linked to is what i'm translating! finnish is hard enough without having to deal with neologisms, ha. yes, i think i have to agree that it does refer to the whole side, ie stripe and otherwise. thanks!
