L'offset est une forme de compensation dans laquelle le pays importateur participe lui-même à la production du bien qu'il achètera. Elle se traduit par des opérations de coproduction, de sous-traitance et de transferts de technologie. Le pays importateur peut ainsi améliorer ses capacités technologiques. Les offsets concernent généralement de grands groupes industriels issus de secteurs à haute valeur ajoutée technologique (aéronautique, armement, ...) et s'appliquent à des échanges dont les montants sont élevés

هناك أنماطا عديدة لهذا النظام في التجارة منها المقايضة حيث يتم تبادل بضائع أو خدمات ذات قيمة متتساوية بين طرفين مباشرين وكذلك الشراء المقابل الممتد بمعني معاملة تبادلية تعقد بين طرفين يتعهد فيها أحد الطرفين بأن يشتري بضائع أو خدمات أو بنقل تكنولوجيا أو ترخيص تصنيع مقابل تعهد الطرف الآخر.
وهناك نمط آخر وهو الشراء المقابل المعجل وهو قيام البلد المصدر بتسليم البضائع أولا مقابل قيام البلد المستورد بإيداع ثمن البضاعة في حساب ضمان مجمد أو معلق يوافق عليه الطرفان ويكون ضمانا لتنفيذ الاتفاق السلعي ويتقاسم الطرفان عائد الفائدة الناتجة عن الوديعة. وأسلوب آخر وهو صفقات المقاصة أو التسويات وهو اتفاقية ثنائية بين حكومتين تنص علي شراء كل منهما كميات معينة من منتجات الدولة الأخري باستخدام عملية حسابية دفترية من خلال البنك المركزي.
وهناك الأنماط الأخري مثل التعويض أو إعادة الشراء أو التوازن والمعارضة وهو نوع من الصفقات التقليدية بشراء معدات وأدوات عسكرية متعلقة بالطائرات مقابل الحصول علي تكنولوجيا متقدمة من بلد المنتج وإعادة استثمار جزء من ثمن السلاح أو الطائرات في توريد عناصر أو معدات أو وحدات شبه مجمعة يتم انتاجها في البلد المستورد ثم جلبها منه.
