De gloss werkt hier zo'n beetje als het 'glacis' van Van der Weyden:
"Van der Weyden werkte vooral in een nat-in-nattechniek om het beoogde effect te krijgen. Om diepte in de kleuren aan te brengen paste hij een transparante techniek toe, het glacis. Zodoende kreeg hij een diepere kleurintensiteit dan wanneer hij alleen kleurstoffen vermengde en opbracht."
