Het is een regeltje uit de Marseillaise. Het woord 'étandard' komt van het Oud-Franse 'estendart' en betekent zoveel als 'standaard' of 'vaandel'. (Definitie in Van Dale)

Als je op Google 'étandard sanglant' intikt krijg je op sommige sites de volledige tekst van het Franse volkslied, als je 'étandard' ingeeft krijg je een aantal sites waarop vaandels of vaandelhouders worden verkocht.
