La freinte est un terme juridique très ancien. Il s’agit d’une perte souvent confondue avec le vol, car comme lui cette perte est a posteriori financière.
Précisément, la freinte concerne la partie d’un intrant donné qui n’a pas de fonction indépendante dans le processus de production, qui n’est pas consommée dans la production du produit exporté (pour cause d’inefficacité par exemple) et qui n’est pas récupérée, utilisée ou vendue par ce même fabricant. En clair, la freinte est la part d’un produit qui disparaît entre l’amont et l’aval d’une opération, celle-ci pouvant être un simple stockage, un transport.
