positive operating profit

Explanation:
Yes and no to answer your question. Profit is not just profit, and a negative operating profit can exist.

"What Does Operating Profit Mean?
The profit earned from a firm's normal core business operations. This value does not include any profit earned from the firm's investments (such as earnings from firms in which the company has partial interest) and the effects of interest and taxes.
Also known as "earnings before interest and tax" (EBIT)"

neutral  rkillings: Avoid, out of date in EU. "Operating" is purpose left undefined in the IFRSs, and "profit" is expected to be on the bottom line. This is a group referring to its consolidated income statement.

a positive balance / yields a surplus

Explanation:
I am no expert in this field by any means, but I understand this phrase, as you commented, to be the profit or "surplus" at the end of the year; in other words, the company is in the red...

I want to correct my last word! The company is in the black, not the red! Sorry!!

positive operating income

Explanation:
or you could just use "operating profit" (It's a profit, so you don't need to stress that it's positive)

income from operations

Explanation:
All you need to say, really. "of €XXXm in 2010 [it makes no sense to date a 12-month income figure to the last day of the year], compared with €XXm the year before". If they had had a loss last year, that would be news, and you'd insert "a loss of". Don't make it sound like they are tooting their own horn about being in the black on operations.
