French term or phrase: Racine de compte
I´m translating a letter sent to a client about his subscription to a service called "Club Affairs", which consists of a monthly paid chauffering service. At the beginning of the letter there appears the following:

Compte client:......
Objet: votre abonnement Club Affaires
Racine de compte: 432R

What is a "Racine de compte"? Is it a sort code? A password?

Thanks for your help!

disagree  philgoddard: Racine doesn't mean ratio, and this makes no sense in the context anyway.

account root

Explanation:
I found this term on a bilingual Band of Canada website:

Par actif personnel, Banque Nationale Courtage direct entend l’actif détenu sous une même racine de compte (6 premiers chiffres du numéro de compte) en date du dernier jour ouvrable du mois précédent.
http://www.bnc.ca/bnc/cda/newsdetail/0,2714,articleCode-1540...

By personal assets, NBDB means assets held under the same account root (first 6 digits of the account number) on the last business day of the previous month.
http://www.nbc.ca/bnc/cda/newsdetail/0,2714,articleCode-1540...

They kindly explain (in French and English) that the term relates to the first six digits of the account number.

In the case of your source text, perhaps the account root relates to the first four characters of the account number.

agree  philgoddard: I don't think people will understand what "account root" means, but "first four characters" would do.

-> Probably so! Note that the Bank of Canada felt obliged to gloss it. Thank you.

agree  rkillings: Usually better, "account root code". In data structure parlance, it's a "node". Typically a prefix in the number of one or more child accounts, NOT an account in itself.

-> Thank you. I think "node" works for this context.
