French term or phrase: il cultive des positions tranchees
This in a newspaper article about a media mogul in the following context:
Friends with the Bush Family, xxxxxxxx, leading him to oppose sb. (he is known for being an outspoken critic of the latter) .

I am finding it difficult to find a suitable phrase which flows in this article. Can anybody help?

This is more along the lines of what I was trying to find myself and stays true to the source text. I also like Julie's idea of clear-cut and hard-line with it too...

He adopts

Explanation:
to adopt is good for 'cultiver' as it's often used for politics - to adopt a stance / position

There are lots of other good suggestions here as to what could come next:

he adopts clear-cut positions

he adopts hard-line stances etc

Asker: I like your idea of clear-cut and hard-line since these are true to the original however am only able to award points once so I think it fair to give them to John for coming up with "to adopt..." first

agree  LBMas: Actually, both 'adopt' and 'uncompromising came from John. :)

he tends to take clear-cut positions

Explanation:
US journalistic cliché. There's no real cognate for "cultiver" in this context but since there's no example given (or maybe there is later) that indicates that a number of his issue positions are expressed in clear language that doesn't allow for the usual fudging.

This probably has to do with the idea that GWB needs to get out of the "echo chamber" of beni-oui-ouis and talk to a member of the reality-based community...what is "sb."?

Asker: sb = somebody. Looking back my original explanation of context wasn't terribly clear was it?!
