French to English translations [PRO]
Marketing - Advertising / Public Relations / trade fair presentations
French term or phrase: plateau télé
We have had this word before and 'TV studio or stage set' were suggested. My sentence is:
Les conférences se dérouleront sur le plateau télé et seront ensuite disponibles sur internet.
It is a large trade fair with two days of presentations / symposia...
I was wondering about TV platform or podium ... or will be broadcast via a TV link ?
but I need someone who knows to confirm this please.
Many thanks Christine

TV studio area
Explanation:
This is quite common- it refers to an area equipped for TV broadcasts set up in another building etc, which is not a purpose built TV studio.

television stage set

Explanation:
Or TV stage set. It is not necessarily a complete TV studio, although it can be, of course.

On second thought, perhaps even just "stage set" will do.

Example sentence(s):
  • Limelight events provided Microhire the initial design and brief to provide a television stage set (talk show) where a number of activities including guest interviews took place.
  • This isn’t the first time [CP Home] has built display kitchens like this; In partnership with House Beautiful, he built the 2008 Kitchen of the Year in Rockefeller Plaza and built the kitchen for Oprah's television stage set in 2009.

neutral  cc in nyc: IMO, only if taping/recording takes place in a television studio, which might not be the case at a trade fair. //1/ Nope, much TV broadcasting done on location. Plus, here, not broadcasting but webcasting (disponibles sur intenet) 2/TV set for monitoring
32 mins
-> don't you need a studio to broadcast? then why the TV was there ?

neutral  Tony M: I would avoid the use of 'studio' here, for the reasons I have already outlined above.

broadcasted via TV

Explanation:
Plateau can be understood as to mean: in the form of, by means of, tv platform and so on. In other words a cameramen/woman could be filming what is happening within these conferences, i.e. Interviews, displays, people's exchange of ideas, meetings etc, and at the same time being shown/displayed on TV screens across these areas. Whatever is filmed is then downloaded to the Internet.
Of course this is just an idea and it is good that you are going to inquire about this as my answer can be judged and tried!

disagree  Tony M: Not what the original means, and in EN, we don't say 'broadcasted'; the past tense of 'broadcast' remains 'broadcast' — and cf. "the voters cast their votes yesterday"; in any case, Asker has made it clear that this is specifically not broadcast TV

disagree  cc in nyc: Sounds wrong to me:
1/ webcast, not broadcast
2/ even if the medium referred to as TV, "via TV" seems wrong to me

TV set

Explanation:
Lots of major exhibitions set up a special TV area that can be used by various participants for various purposes (press conferences, live coverage, corporate video, TV current affairs reporting, etc.)

It would help to know what sort of form it takes, I'd almost be inclined to say 'TV area', but it rather all depends on what actual form it takes. I think it would be relatively unlikely that they'd actually set up a complete studio (which tends usually to imply some kind of building) — though you might feel that 'TV studio area' could be a good compromise solution.

I am not aware of a grander term, though pelase note that my experience lies in the TV side of thing, not exhibitions / trade shows, so they could well have specialist jargon of which I am unaware.

It is very customary for purely internal 'video' to be referred to as 'TV', even though it has no connection with 'real' broadcast television.

Traditionally, 'video' has been looked down upon as something amateur, while 'TV' has had an aspirational professional ring about it.

And in the biz, we do indeed talk about a 'TV set' without it's meaning an actual television receiver; I think this perception of ambiguity which doesn't really exist is based on people's exposure to this term in layman's language, but not being familiar with it as technicla jragon in the industry.

neutral  cc in nyc: I agree with Arnold; I doubt I would say "TV set"; to me it sounds like closed circuit TV rather than a TV stage set. // RE: CCTV: "used for security / surveillance systems": yes, I think that's why "TV set" sounds wrong to me
2 hrs
-> Thanks, CC! I guess that's just because it's not familiar to you as industry jargon; 'closed circuit TV' is not much used in corporate video, these days only really used for surveillance. / But a whole world of difference between 'TV' and 'CCTV'!
