Advertising / Public Relations
French term or phrase: Roughman
I'm currently translating a CV and am having difficulties with a few terms.

- The person describes themselves as a "Roughman" and "Storyboarder". I'm translating "Storyboarder" as "Storyboard artist" but am unsure about "Roughman".

I've found the following definition:

À partir des instructions des créatifs, il réalise les roughs (prononcez "reufs"), c’est-à-dire les esquisses d’un spot ou d’une annonce. Le dessin ou croquis doit être le plus précis possible pour donner une idée juste de la campagne envisagée et guider le travail du photographe, du cameraman ou du maquettiste. Le roughman exerce la plupart du temps en free-lance et doit se constituer lui-même sa clientèle auprès des agences de pub et des directeurs artistiques. (http://www.letudiant.fr/metiers/secteur/marketing-publicite/...

Termium proposes "layout artist", but this doesn't seem to correspond exactly to the definition of a roughman (too much focus on layout, not any original drawing).

The following definition of a storyboard artist seems to correspond better:

In advertising, the storyboard artist can be called upon to create a representation of what the finished TV commercial, or spot, will look like in order to persuade and engage the client to buy the concept being pitched. This can either be at the time the agency is trying to win the client's business or once the client has signed on with the agency. In either case, the important element is for the storyboards to visualize for the client what the agency's creative director or "creatives" are thinking will sell the client's product. A storyboard artist may also be asked to visually represent several versions of a campaign for print ads. This gives a client a chance to choose between variations and allows them to be included in the creative process.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storyboard_artist).

Could it be that a "roughman" is a "storyboard artist" in the advertising industry and a "storyboarder" is a "storyboard artist" in the film industry?

Any confirmation/suggestions would be gratefully received.

This often seems to be prefixed by "freehand" and that could perhaps be the difference as I believe a lot of this artwork is produced on computers nowadays

Apologies for the delay in grading. I actually went for 'concept artist' in the end, but 'sketch artist' was certainly another possibility, and it was your suggestion that put me on the right path.

agree  Tony M: Yes, the 'rough' is the stage before we get to the actual storyboard. The term is usual in EN.

It does seem to be a storyboard artist in English which of course makes the translation of the two terms together a little tricky
