Science - Agriculture / Interview With Farmer
French term or phrase: grenaille de l'environnement
Describing the use of new farming technologies:

Tous ceux qui ont l'impression que dans le sens du **grenaille de l'environnement,** et écologie se trompent complètement puisque on sait qu'aujourd'hui que les OGMs sont les matières premières alimentaires qui sont les plus surveillés qui ont été plus analysées qu'il y a quinze ans de recul...tout comme problème."

Estates-General on the environment

Explanation:
It's a huge think-tank on the environment convened by the French government. Maybe the "Grenaille" comes from the venue or some other historical reference - I've often wondered about that. Environment Forum or "Estates-General on the Environment" is how I'd translate it.

Forgot to add - the farmer's probably making a pun: grenaille ("chicken feed") versus grenelle. See Grenelle de l'environnement -- What's a "grenelle"?30 Oct 2007 ... French president Nikolas Sarkozy's "Grenelle de l'environnement" is as hard for Americans to translate as it is for us to understand. ... and other references

agree  Michael GREEN: It is "Grenelle de l'environnement" :)) but grenaille is perhaps more appropriate, used by a farmer (it's a term for small new potatoes ...). see http://www.legrenelle-environnement.fr/grenelle-environnemen... sorry Gabrielle - didn't see your 2nd post :)

"Grenelle" environmental round table

Explanation:
I think it's worth keeping some part of the original French to keep it clear (to those who know) what we are talking about.

Unless there is any reason to think it's a pun (and I see nothing in the admittedly very short excerpt to suggest this), I imagine it's a typo. Or the SpellChecker strikes again ...

neutral  Gabrielle Leyden: Given the angry tone, I think it's a pun on "middlings", "buck shot" and/or small potatoes. How about "environmental 'escapes-general'"?

agree  Clair@Lexeme: I always keep the French name in there too ... but I am wondering if there is an intentional pun in there ... somehow belittling this Round Table ??? So half an agree really...!
