French to English translations [PRO] Agriculture / land use
French term or phrase:pastillage
I don't know what this means in the following context from a land use document in France:
Le choix d'un classement spécifique centré sur ce bâti non agricole entraînerait un <> de l'espace agricole fortement dommageable pour son intégrité et incitant au développement de friches spéculatives.
But from the context, it would seem that while "mitage" is being used in the sense you indicate, housing developments dotting the countryside, "pastillage" is being used to describe the effect of "mitage" on agricultural land, i.e. the fact that it is being broken up. So wouldn't something along the lines of "fragmentation," as jlsjr suggests, work here?
The word used most currently is mitage, but pastillage should have the same meaning. I can't see what else it could mean. This means that the new homes are being built right through the country, whether isolated, in small clusters or in small developments, not close to the cities or villages, but more or less haphazardly. When traveling through the country, one sees them dotting it. One is even using it exactly in the same meaning for the wind farms.
See http://www.faisonsvite.fr/IMG/pdf/Avis_ADEME_changeons_d_e_r... "La planification du développement de l’éolien est indispensable afin d’éviter le mitage du territoire par une dispersion de petits projets" (de parcs éoliens)
Several possibilities for mitage: Termium gives urban sprawl, GDT gives "urban scattering" (not something I've ever seen used in real life), the Robert defines it as "éparpillement anarchique des constructions," which might be a bit different from encroachment or urban sprawl. Might be worth posting this (non-Pro) as a separate question, with an explanation of the context, and see what people think.
Dans un souci de reconquête du terroir face au mitage et de renforcement de l'agriculture, une partie des zones NB du P.O.S. a été reclassée en zone A au P.L.U. Reclassement, qui par ailleurs, vient encadrer plus strictement le bâti non agricole participant au mitage de l'espace agricole.
