This is taken from a text about tests on treatments for vegetable, fruit and flower crops. I understand that it's a crop cultivated under standard conditions (i.e. without the treatment) as a 'control'. Would 'control modality' be appropriate here? Many thanks in advance.

This was excellent and extremely helpful. In the end, I mostly opted for 'control sample' as they seemed to be referring to and comparing different batches of the fungicide. Thanks to all for their help, which is much appreciated.
