-> Thank you - I knew of the practice in West Africa in particular, I had not realised it also extended to India

agree  xxxBourth: ;-) There's so much out there I thought it would be a shame not to draw attention to some of it.

I can only imagine these things are called trous either
- because other French words like "mare" are too "culturally" attached to the French (geographical) context for hexagonal French speakers to be comfortable with it in sub-saharan Africa, and no other word is suitable for the context, or
- because the Africans themselves are not familiar with the concept of mare.

Just think of the difficulty we can have translating a simple word like étang !

Of course the slime that will build up in such a pond will be an excellent fertilizer. And there can be a lot of it. Last summer I helped a neighbour net unwanted fish in his carp lake, during the drought that had taken the water level right down. In places we were in slime to mid-thigh.

Researching some more, however, "fish holes" of different types going under different names in different parts of the continent appear to have been with us for centuries.

Nevertheless, one does find examples of traditional BRUSHPARKS, DRAIN-IN PONDS and shellfish culture. The best known type of BRUSHPARKS are the Beninese acadja and the Madagascan vovomora (Welcomme, 1972; Kapetzky, 1981; cited in ICLARM and GTZ, 1991). The best-known type of drain-in pond is the Beninese WHEDO, a very old tradition noted by Bourgoignie (1972). As for shellfish culture, the Sudan seems to be the country whose traditions date back farthest (Balarin, 1988b).

About 3,500 fishermen practise the acadja technique in the Porto-Novo lagoon and Lake Nokoué. This is a traditional technique that involves creating an enclosure with branches. The fish are protected from predators and can feed on the algae that grow on the submerged parts of the branches. The yield from an acadja enclosure is between 1.5 and 8 tonnes per hectare per year, depending on how effectively the barrier has been constructed. WHEDO OR “FISH HOLES “ is another traditional technique used by lagoon fishermen to take advantage of the rises and falls in the water level. Large shallow holes are dug in the flood plain around the lagoon in which the fish become trapped when the level subsides. There is an estimated annual catch of 1,500 tonnes from 1,095 hectares of traps in the Ouémé Valley
