GLOSSARY ENTRY (DERIVED FROM QUESTION BELOW)
French term or phrase:
vide sanitaire
English translation:
disinfection downtime or rest period / depopulation period
French to English translations [PRO] Science - Agriculture / Rearing pigs
French term or phrase:vide sanitaire
Si les temps de croissance sont diminués le taux de rotation des bâtiments sera amélioré qui permet de respecter des *vides sanitaires* entre chaque bande.
This refers to the compulsory time lapse between housing two different herds in a building. This time is used to clean and disinfect the building so that any latent agents of disease or infection left by the old herd can be cleaned up properly and the new herd will not be compromised. I cannot find a satisfactory En expression.
Thanks - Bourth's contribution was equally relative, I hope it is OK to add this to the gloss too. I chose yours because although the term referred to herd rotation, it nevertheless included sanitation of the area and the client wanted that included. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
I see it, yes - thanks, Leslie. I was looking around at fallow, which I only know in terms of fields. Apart from your reference, Wendy, I cannot find it in relation to animals. The link to Wordreference forums from gallagy2 was interesting but inconclusive. It looks like your suggestion is widely used, thanks Leslie. *Glad others are also working late!*

Sorry my link didn't work because it's a pdf. Several good references come up if you type without quotes: disinfection downtime rest period

I meant to say, if you type those keywords in Google, of course.
Example sentence(s):
...range areas have a rest period of an entire growing season (i.e. over the winter months) between flocks of poultry. In the current manual the downtime period has been changed to 21 days.

the important point is that this is not quarantine of animals but rather the buildings they are kept in are being kept empty for a period to eliminate any contamination before the arrival of the next animals

Explanation: If your vide sanitaire is because one herd has been taken to the abattoir and the shed is subsequently occupied by a new, younger herd, then "depopulation period" might work. Reference to temps de croissance suggests this is the case. "Restock period" might also work here.
However, if by rotation they mean after a certain period a herd is moved to a clean shed and may subsequently be moved back to the previous shed, once cleaned, then "depopulation" probably wouldn't work, for although the shed might be said to be "depopulated", "depopulation" usually refers to elimination, culling, getting the chop.
"Downtime" would work in both cases though.
Standard DOWNTIMES
This depends on the diseases to be eliminated. For instance with Brachyspira hyodysenteriae (Swine Dysentery) it should be a minimum of 8 weeks
For routine RESTOCK 6 weeks would be the suggested minimum
Depopulation
DEPOPULATION means total removal of all pigs and their products from the farm for the downtime period http://www.portec.com.au/thepig/treatments/depopulationintro...
Those parts of buildings, equipment or utensils which are in contact with the chickens shall be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected every time after DEPOPULATION IS CARRIED OUT, before a new flock is introduced into the unit. http://www.linguee.fr/francais-anglais/traduction/troupeau.h...

DEPOPULATION refers to removing all cattle from the farm. A mandatory period without cattle on the farm follows depopulation while the farm is cleaned and testing protocols are tailored to the individual farm situation http://dare.colostate.edu/skoontz/book/ch15_final.pdf
The first questions to ask is: Given the environmental conditions that would exist in the barn over the DEPOPULATION PERIOD, how long will the organisms survive? Survival will vary with the nature of the organism and the barn and climatic conditions. http://blog.prairielivestocksupply.com/post/2009/07/17/Mycop...

Notes to answerer
Asker: Very comprehensive, as usual. It does indeed refer to rotation of herds where one goes off to slaughter and the newly bred herd is introduced. Thank you.
