French term or phrase: dégradation des dièdres aciers
I had initially translated this as "damage to the steel dihedra" but it's not quite right. This is about a defect in a cereal dryer. What seems to have happened is that the zinc coating disintegrated because the coating had not adhered properly to the steel. Hope this makes sense.

I'm not sure about "deterioration" either, as proposed in another rather similar Proz question.

Here's where it appears:

wear of the steel laterals
Explanation:
I imagine your dièdres are the nave-shaped steel thing shown here:
http://www.agriconsult.fr/sechoirs-a-colonnes.html

Possibly the "hot air laterals" here:
http://www.tornum.se/?p=10104&m=2548

Yup.
Inside the drying and cooling column is a series of galvanized and specially tapered inlet and exhaust LATERALS. THE LATERALS ARE STAGGERED throughout the column to ensure even airflow, mixing of the grain and uniform drying.

HALF LATERALS on the hot air side are fitted to the side walls of the dryer to prevent condensation.
http://www.tornum.se/?p=10163&m=2550

Since the laterals appear to intercept falling grain, I imagine they are prone to wear, and I imagine "wear" is what they mean by dégradation here, but I suppose you could also say "damage to the steel laterals".

Notes to answerer
Asker: Actually in the end I used "degradation" as it seemed more than wear and tear. But "laterals" was far better than "dihedra" IMHO.
