French term or phrase: réappropriation de l'espace public
A text about rivers. Réappropriation is a very trandy term in culture these days. Is there a standard treatment for this notion in English?

réappropriation de l'espace public
to reclaim public space

Explanation:
It depends on the context of the passage; is it dealing with reclaiming nature or unlawfully appropriating land?
"reclaim" = "to make available for human use by changing natural conditions" <eg.reclaim swampland>
whereas
"appropriate" could imply "to take or make use of without authority or right".
Because you mention rivers, I lean towards the use of 'reclaim'.

agree  Dylan Edwards: I agree with the word "reclaim" but don't think it's the "swamp reclamation" kind of reclaiming here. Try googling for "reclaiming public space" and see what comes up.
