Archaeology / Egyptian remains
French term or phrase: chasse
In a text about Egyptian remains in Abydos. I have found a website with a picture: http://alain.guilleux.free.fr/abydos/abydos_temple_sethi_hyp...
The picture is the 6th from the top. What would the English be, please? TIA

Thanks very much indeed. If they had put the curcumflex on this, it would have been a lot easier!

Explanation:
Although Philippe has of course suggested the most usual translation of this word, from the context you've given, it does sound to me as if this object NECESSARILY contains 'relics' or anything that is going to be actually worshipped as such, so I would like to suggest this more 'neutral' alternative, which says more about the form of the object than about its function.

You might even like to consider 'coffer' or 'chest', departing slightly further from the original perhaps, but still in more or less the same vein.

Having just visited the site and found the picture, I think my suggestion is probably less applicable, it seems rather a large afffair!

agree  Cervin: Perhaps better to go for a fairly neutral word as it isnt really clear what is contained therein!

agree  ArchyR: It's as simple as that - I studied Egyptology for several years at UC Berkeley

-> thanks from a translator with zero credential in Egyptology but some experience with this type of material ("portable shrine" is commonly used in texts describing ceremonies in Japan, Bali, Thailand, etc.)

agree  Christopher Crockett: Yes, and note that it is a sort of "micro-architecture" as well: http://alain.guilleux.free.fr/abydos/Pc040491.jpg

"portable shrine" is the perfectly right term to describe my picture.

And sorry for the curcumflex...
