agree  Christopher Crockett: Yes, it's not a "sondage" --something much more modest in size-- but one which cuts right through the site, all the way down to "virgin" soil, for the purpose of establishing the stratigraphy of the whole site. Excavation is destruction.

neutral  Christopher Crockett: No, an "exploratory trench" would be a "sondage" --something much more modest in size than this one, which cuts right through the site, all the way down to "virgin" soil, for the purpose of establishing the stratigraphy.

work round it

Explanation:
Somehow I don't think this is an established TYPE of trench in archaeology, but is simply a way of saying that this trench served to check/confirm the guy's idea/premise.

I suggest you work round it:

Mr X decided to have a 15 m long, 8 m deep trench excavated in the western "tell" to check/confirm his premise, i.e. find evidence of (or did they already know the Romans had occupied this particular location, in which case maybe "i.e. expose remains of ...") Roman occupation and look for traces of the pre-Roman buildings/settlement he suspected were there / expected to find ..."

What I mean is, of the 10 Google hits for "tranchée de contrôle":

1 is the text referred to here
5 are ProZ discussion of that text
1 concerns a trench to prevent propagation of unwanted plants
1 is a trench to intercept contaminants in soil.
