French term or phrase: bois des caissons
Also from text on excavation of site in north Africa.

timbers used for shuttering
Explanation:
Aalthough caisson is also translated as 'caisson' in English.

The pisé technique doesn't have a 'timber frame'. Rather it uses temporary flat panels (made of timbers of the appropriate length) to mould the adobe into a vertical wall, and when it has dried the shuttering/caisson is slid upwards to form a trough at the top to receive the next-higher layer of adobe - much like modern concrete buildings are built.

agree  Charles Hawtrey: Looks good to me. Or 'shuttering timbers' perhaps. So possibly 'pains d'adobe' could equally be 'adobe blocks' (cf. http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1957464
