French to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Archaeology / Excavations | | French term or phrase: bois des caissons | Also from text on excavation of site in north Africa.
"c’est cette technique - celle des pisés - qui est le plus souvent employée, sauf peut-être dans les époques les plus anciennes ou, à l’autre extrémité du continuum historique, lorsque la brique et le ciment viennent à être utilisés de préférence. Selon les époques, les dimensions des bois des caissons varient de manière notable : des mesures répétitives réalisées sur les élévations montrent que l’on a employé six modules principaux". |

| | timbers used for shuttering | Explanation: Aalthough caisson is also translated as 'caisson' in English.
The pisé technique doesn't have a 'timber frame'. Rather it uses temporary flat panels (made of timbers of the appropriate length) to mould the adobe into a vertical wall, and when it has dried the shuttering/caisson is slid upwards to form a trough at the top to receive the next-higher layer of adobe - much like modern concrete buildings are built.
