French term or phrase: demeurer dans l’ombre
the sentenc is "Or, si grâce aux études paléoenvironnementales développées dans les Alpes du Sud depuis 7 à 8 ans, on cerne mieux l’impact sur l’environnement naturel de la croissance du pastoralisme, les modalités pratiques de l’établissement et du fonctionnement de ces terroirs, notamment des réseaux hydrauliques souvent encore présents actuellement dans le paysage, demeurent dans l’ombre."
I am unsure whether this is literally "left in the sahde", or "unearthed" (as in an archeaological dig) or simply, "left unnoticed" "undealt with"....
