French term or phrase: engagés entre les latéraux
This is in an explanation of the characterestics of prehistoric wolf and/or dog footprints found in a cave.
I have tentatively translated it as: "the morphology of the autopods strays from that of the wolf in the reduction of the relative length of the medial toes, which transforms the geometry of its image into a hollow in the footprint, or a raised area on the rubbing; the digital pads of the second and third toes are clearly bound between the sides, which is the rule for dogs, including the largest ones."

Explanation:
Hello,

engagé (here) = protruding

engagé = saillant tout en faisant corps avec l'ensemble architectural

I hope this helps.

The fact that this is the foot of an animal as opposed to some architectural structure makes little difference, in my humble opinion.

This could be complete nonsense, but I wonder whether it means the imprint of the lateral toe is seen, or has left its trace in the cast between the medial ...

Notes to answerer
Asker: The way I understand it, wolves probably have longer second and third toes than the surrounding ones, but this individual seems to have toes that do not stick out much beyond the others. (I have the advantage of looking at the imprint.) I'm just not finding a way to express that, and none of the definitions of 'engagé' seem to fit.

Asker: Belated thanks, Matthew. I wanted to get someone else's opinion on this one since I had such trouble checking it using the paw prints themselves.
