French to English translations [PRO] Science - Archaeology / Ichnology | | French term or phrase: engagés entre les latéraux | This is in an explanation of the characterestics of prehistoric wolf and/or dog footprints found in a cave. The complete sentence is "la morphologie des autopodes s'éloigne du loup par la réduction de la longueur relative des doigts médians, ce que traduit la géométrie de son image en creux sur l'empreinte ou en relief sur l'estampage, les coussinets digitaux des deuxième et troisième doigts sont nettement engagés entre les latéraux, ce que est la règle pour les chiens y compris les plus gros."
I have tentatively translated it as: "the morphology of the autopods strays from that of the wolf in the reduction of the relative length of the medial toes, which transforms the geometry of its image into a hollow in the footprint, or a raised area on the rubbing; the digital pads of the second and third toes are clearly bound between the sides, which is the rule for dogs, including the largest ones." |

| | the digital pads are protruding as opposed to the side ones | Explanation: Hello,
engagé (here) = protruding
engagé = saillant tout en faisant corps avec l'ensemble architectural
I hope this helps.

The fact that this is the foot of an animal as opposed to some architectural structure makes little difference, in my humble opinion. |
