Explanation:
The first thing to note here is "de sol" which is stating the obvious. Could this be a mild error for "au sol" as in "ground survey", the author wishing to make it clear that s/he didn't carry out an "aerial survey"? Only one person knows the answer to that question...

I think you can forget about "global" in the English because "survey" covers that idea admirably.

The extract below explains why "dig" or "excavation" should not be used to translate "prospection":

La prospection peut être définie comme une méthode globale d'appréhension de l'ensemble des traces des aménagements apportés par les sociétés humaines à leur environnement physique et vivant. Elle constitue une démarche en amont de la fouille, puisqu'elle permet de répondre à la question : « où est-il pertinent de fouiller » ? Les outils de la prospection sont variés et complémentaires : observations, études des documents anciens, mesures sur le terrain. ... Contrairement à la fouille, la prospection ne détruit pas l'objet d'étude et elle permet de répondre, sans le moindre dommage, à beaucoup des questions que se pose l'archéologue.

Asker: Thank you for your suggestion and comments. I agree that "dig" should be avoided in this case. I used data-gathering, and would have used survey as well.
