La diffusion de ses idées sur la ville offrait un cadre référentiel solide, tandis que les débuts de l’école tessinoise sur la scène internationale annonçait un retour à l'édification.

The dissemination of his ideas on the city offered a solid referential framework, whilst the Tessin School’s arrival onto the international architectural scene, heralded a new return to building.

edification can mean building ot it can mean enlightenment. I know the obvious one is building but enlightenment would also asctually work in this context!!! I just want to check it is building.

Explanation:
''...annonçait un retour à l'édification... versus ''heralded a new return to building'' .
I believe that the difference lies in in the French sentence or interpretation in English of: un retour here abbreviated to mean ''un retour en-arrière'' or simply meaning a change to building or constructing.
