Explanation:
As we all know, a "borne" is a milestone. But according to the TLF, it can also be a maker made out of wood, i.e. a pole: "A. Bloc de pierre, poteau, etc. indiquant la limite d'un champ".

Hmm, I'm beginning to think it refers to a central stove and chimney.

Anyway, it is not a common usage of the word "borne". I found a couple of Swiss dictionaries on the web, but "borne" is nowhere to be found.

...à l’instar de la borne des chalets anciens I would translate as:

...Bordering/fashioning the old chalet's style. (in other words: similar to, but not quite exactly the ''thing''.)
