French term or phrase: sa trace est laminée

I am translating a high-brow, poetic/dreamlike and very fanciful (i.e. incomprehensible!) text about a sculptor (XXXX) from the preface of a catalogue containing pictures of his work.

I don´t understand the use of "laminée" in the following paragraph. It's also not entirely clear to me what "trace" is referring to (the "terre rouge" or the "coulées de cannes", I imagine the former given the zebu-drawn carts which appear to be ploughing?).

"L'art moderne s'est empli en Occident de ces faces aveugles du songe que les peuples d'ailleurs portaient en eux, it a refleté ces lumieres eclatées qui aujourd'hui nous donnent à voir le monde. XXXX est au confluent. La rencontre d'un tel mouvement des formes et d'une telle passion d'existence l'a elu a une de ces croisées, marquées de l'invisible, que dans les profonds de Guadeloupe on appelle tout simplement, d'une expression litterale et mysterieuse, un quatre-chemins. La terre rouge borde d'epaisses coulées de cannes, **sa trace est laminée** avec une egale droiture par les charrettes à zebus et les camions diesel. La chaleur y plante ses fumées rases, que nos zombis frequentent.

The road is unpaved and each passing vehicle, whether a cart drawn by zebu (not ploughing) or a lorry leaves its tracks which form layers of the history of what has passed.

B D Finch: How would that fit with "avec une egale droiture"?//Criss-crossed means the tracks are not going in the same direction. I understood it as a road with all tracks going straight and parallel but multilayered.

Just Opera: I agree with B D Finch, IMO the idea is the "traces" make layers (laminate) not criss-crosses. That fits with what follows: "with an equal rectitude"
