I almost voted for Dieezah's "irremediable separation", which is arguably the most faithful translation, but then considered that the poetics of the French collocation rely on the relatively less stressed consonants flowing smoothly on; while in English we like a bit of consonantal emphasis. The linked stressed "p" and unstressed "r" sounds fall in the same order in both English words yielding a pleasing effect: and are equally faithful to the image of a failed coupling, an incompatible relationship, of two physically close but irreconcilable opposites.
