Explanation:
Although 'teinte' is supposed to indicate one of the colours of the spectrum, I believe here it is used in teh way above. 'Nuance' refers clearly to 'shade' (prime colour + black). 'Teinte' should then refer to 'tint' (prime colour + white)

agree  Alan Douglas: Simplest, snappiest and most logical solution. The original French is "odd" - as Kershaw suggests, definitely not a native speaker. The translation should keep the same tone and minimal use of words rather than iron out the original dodgy grammar.
