I would be tempted to substitute the whole lot with adjectives:
"ascetic, radical, pure..." sounds a lot more natural to me.

Asker: Thanks - good idea - much more natural as adjectives: austere, ?, pure. I'm going to look at options for radical - get to the root of it ;-)
