English translation:directness / clarity of black and white
Explanation:
lucidity / clarity / directness are all synonyms of 'obviousness' (http://thesaurus.com/browse/obviousness) with the first two terms matching very well with 'verre'.

that is, black and white

Explanation:
Or perhaps "obviously, black and white."

If this is correct, then I'd probably incorporate the parenthetical phrase into the text and just say "black and white photography."

agree  Just Opera: I think verre here means the technique cliché verre not glass. i.e. temptation is great to move closer / come closer to photography (obviously black and white) and cliché verre.

black and white record

Explanation:
cf "written in black and white".
Of course, photography will be shades of grey... Let's not argue with the author though.

manifestation/exposure of black and white

Explanation:
These words came up while searching through dictionaries/thesaurus sites. If "exposure" risks causing confusion with the idea of photography, maybe "exposing of black and white".
