shake up my ideas

Explanation:
I like Emma's suggestion, but I think it's maybe a little too strong: the artist would presumably not be totally overturning her/his convictions, but shaking them up to express the new theme....

This may be rather more than bousculer, but I think something more radical, less literal, than "shake up my ideas" is required.

BUT <3.> Modifier quelquechose avec brusquerie : Ces jeunes veulent bousculer des idées admises depuis des générations
[Larousse Lexis]

In the latter example, there is also the matter of interpretation. The youth in question (or some part of it) will claim (at some point) it only wanted to shake up the Establishment to get (minor) changes made; the Establishment (and, at another time, the youth concerned, or part of it) will claim it is Revolution that is wanted.

Of course to make this discussion philosophical as well as artistic (to what extent is philosophy art, and vice versa?), we could attempt to determine the extent to which a changed idea is a new idea. If an idea is shaken up, and evolves, is the result merely a modification of the old idea (the same old building with a new coat of paint, but still just as fragile), or is it substantively a new idea (major structural renovation of the building to make it earthquake proof, essentially making it a new building)?
If an idea is turned on its head (and remains intact), nothing will prevent you turning it back on its feet again! Then again, turning it on its head enables you to more easily get into the mechanics underneath/lying it and make the necessary modifications. Still, once changed, is it the same old idea (car) with (minor) modifications, or is it essentially a new idea that, were it a car, would have to go through the French mines / DRIRE conformity testing?

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks a lot: I notice "shake up the Establishment" in there. I think that's good too in my context, or maybe upset (disarrange?) is strong enough.

Asker: There's also "If an idea is shaken up, and evolves, is the result merely a modification of the old idea" that would apply as I see it.

I don't entirely read this like the others. I think that to get the message he wants across he has had to "faire des entorses" or compromise on some of the principles he holds dear

abandon some of my earlier beliefs

Explanation:
Suggestion based on the group discussion. ;-)

If that's too strong, then perhaps "set aside some of my earlier ideas."
