or 'by layering' (this might be the most direct and comprehensible)
"However, depth is suggested, as in Cezanne's works, by a layering of depths" ??? - this means nothing and make no sense. If you refer directly to some works my Cezanne or Renoir, it is clearer (that being said art criticism can be verbose and incomprehensible)
