Explanation:
Although I am not familiar with the text per se, choosing between zero and infinity is common practice in both mathematics and logic. By understanding the extreme limits of a problem one can better understand more realistic alternatives.

When one is having difficulty in choosing, it is sometimes useful to compare what might be sublime and ridiculous outcomes. Thus, I disagree that the choices are either random or arbitrary, but without better awareness of the full-text the jury remains out.
