public domain Explanation: Books, musical compositions, works of art in general, photos, software etc. are considered intellectual properties and require the payment of copyright for their commercial use. After a certain number of years, they usually pass into "public domain"; they are then considered property of everyone - they belong to everybody. When an intellectual work is public domain, payment of copyright is not required for its commercial utilisation.
