I think it is a smaller room adjacent to the main, more public, rooms, where the master(s) of the house could retire to have some privacy.

In other words, it was not a place where all members of the court etc. could go. It was private. Probably in one of the intimate rooms of the "apartements royaux". Private residential apartments within the palace. :)
