ok so here's what i've learned about valves, butterfly and non-butterfly... they are supposed to close when the power source (car motor or other) is shut off. this prevents liquids or, in this case, air from being sucked back into the system. here's a quote from the first website i sited:
"valve (PDF, 140 kb) located on the intake side of the injection pump and connected to the system interlock to prevent fluid from being withdrawn from the supply tank when the irrigation system is either automatically or manually shut down"
