Hi, this is a text about a joint undertaking by a precision engineering company and a car manufacturer.
I don't understand the "ne" in "auxquels la fonderie ne peut prétendre" below.

"Le moteur XXX est une démonstration de l’utilité d'un concept qui permet d’accéder aux meilleurs alliages auxquels la fonderie ***ne*** peut prétendre et qui procure des avantages substantiels en terme de fiabilité, poids et réactivité."

Is this similar to the pleonastic "ne" used with "avoir peur, craindre," etc.?

It seems that the proposed comparison (wasn't it humble enough?) between standard foundry and high-end alloys was and still is misunderstood or ignored. I don't have enough space here to provide details which would substantiate the differences between high-end alloys and (standard) foundry products

ne peut prétendre means "in your dreeams" or "don't even think of it". Hope this slang will help understanding this typically French turn of phrase used to emphacize a comparison element. Mmm...no faux ami here, maybe elsewhere
