French to English translations [PRO]
Science - Botany / litigation doc on cross-contamination of tomato seeds
French term or phrase: greffé
"Enfin, dans les dossiers indemnises par Societe ABC, le cas 53 concerne Societe XYZ pour du [plant name] greffé [plant name]."

If "greffé" = "grafted", how should I translate "CDE greffé TUV"?

Thanks!

agree  Catherine Johnstone: grafted from X to Y would be enough I believe, am not too keen on the onto

-> Thanks. I think the English translation would become clearer were we to know what the abbreviations stood for.

agree  Miranda Joubioux: I bought a grafted tomato last year. It wasn't a healthy plant and got serious mildew. I don't think I even saw a tomato. Definitely 'grafted'.

Explanation:
Tomatoes are hybridized, or "cross-contaminated" via the pollen.

"Grafting" usually implies cutting off a piece of a plant and attaching it to another variety in the hope that it will "take", which I do not think is usually done with tomatoes.

neutral  Cetacea: Tomatoes are indeed being grafted, see e.g. http://alumni.cse.ucsc.edu/~agu/framing/grafting.html You could even watch the process on YouTube, by the way. ;-)

-> OK, but the context is "litigation on cross-contamination". I thought cross-contamination usually occurred via the pollen.

Hello Ken

Don't you think it would be a good idea to let us know what your abbreviations stand for then there is more chance people can help you?

Note to reference poster
Asker: Hi Liz, I'm afraid I can't (for confidentiality reasons). In any case, the text is a litigation doc about the cross-contamination of tomato seeds and many different varieties are mentioned, so the actual names wouldn't make things any clearer (i.e. the text contains a number of different examples of 1 variety "greffe" on another). Thanks!

Asker: I think so, but I don't get much time to read about botany when I'm filming a movie.
