French term or phrase:pelouses à brachypodes
Hello,
I'm translating a guide book to the Hérault area, the following passage describes the brushland in the Cazouls area. Am having problems finding a translation for "pélouses à brachypodes"
Elles sont dominées par la brousse à kermès et de vastes étendues de pelouses à brachypodes, particulièrement riches en herbacées
Explanation: I think they are probably taking about Brachypodium retusum (Mediterranean grass) here. Welll, it could be one of several species of grass in the genus Brachypodium actually. BTW, I don't know how to write things in italics here but I meant to write 'Brachypodium' in italics.
Brachypodium is a genus of about 26 annual or perennial grasses from the Northern Hemisphere. Flimsy upright stems form tussocks. Flowers appear in compact spike-like racemes with 5-25 flowers on each short-stalked spikelet in summer. Leaves are flat or curved.[1]
Cultivation Plant in any well-drained soil in full sun. Propagate from seed.

I think it might be better to say 'Brachypodium grasslands'.

You can say 'wheat stands' or 'stands of rye' for example, so I imagine it is also correct to say 'Brachypodium stands'. However, if it is not a scientific text - and more for the general public - I think that 'grasslands' would probably be better.

The French are more particular about naming types of grass than anglophones, so unless the book's aimed at farmers or botanists a more general term would probably do.

Explanation: Depending on the size, I'd say patches if these areas are relatively small, or if extensive, then grasslands as already been suggested. I think the term "stands" is used more for trees, shrubs, or broad-leaf plants rather than grasses. "Stand" is also used for crops, as in a good stand, meaning that the crop emerged well in the field, most of the seeds came up (no bare spots, etc.).
