Explanation:
and without any form of checking, I imagine this is "going to seed", when the lettuce abandons its roundish shape and shoots up, producing seeds.

premature bolting, which, applied to a door, is the opposite of locking the stable door after the horse has bolted but, in the case of the horse, is not.

This non-heading lettuce comes in a variety of leaf shapes and colors. This type is best for the home gardener because it can withstand hotter temperatures and is slower to BOLT (go to seed) than most.
