MF = millions de Francs Explanation: I have always seen *milliards* abbreviated with an M with a horizontal line above directly above the M, and *millions* abbreviated with a simple M. If I were you, I would check with the client though because if you are working from an electronic document (or even a printed one that has not been proofread for that matter!) the character for *milliards* (that I can not even reproduce here) may have been intended in your text and lost due to font issues. Courage ! |

241 MF = 241 millions francs Explanation: Here is the rule: milliard n m = Mille millions. If the rule is applied correctly, that is... Sometimes, it isn't.

Fr241m Explanation: The French "million (M)" is equal to one million in English. Here are some examples from the Larousse Business Dictionary (FR>ENG) Ex 1 : "la société a perdu 100 millions de francs / 100 MF sur le marché africain" = "the company lost 100 millions francs /Fr100m in the African market" Ex 2 : "notre chiffre d'affaires est passé à 13,4 millions de dollars" = "our turnover has risen to 13.4 millions dollars ($13.4m) A "milliard" is a thousand million and translates as a "billion". EURODICAUTOM suggests that British English uses "thousand million" whereas US English uses "billion". I would vouch for many Brits using billion. I am and I do, if I am anything to go by! French Term milliard English Abbreviation bn Signification billion French Term milliard English Term thousand million (gb); billion (us) "Million" and "milliard" confirmed by the GDT : M = million n. m. G n. m. Déf. : Mille millions. (And a useful note in the GDT) Note : Les symboles d'unités monétaires peuvent être précédés des préfixes SI k pour kilo (mille, 10 exposant 3), M pour méga (million, 10 exposant 6), G pour giga (milliard, 10 exposant 9), T pour téra (billion, 10 exposant 12) dans les tableaux et dans les cas où le manque réel de place l'impose. 241 million francs Explanation: xMF is very common in French financial texts and newspaper articles. I don't know what the abbreviation for billions might be, which is not surprising, since it is far less common. Probably there isn't even one. |
