French term or phrase: "a.i." in "Directeur général a.i."
This seems to be a Belgian title, as Google searches have just turned up the "a.i." part on Belgian sites. Unfortunately, I don't have much of a context, since it's just a short letter from this person, the Managing Director [a.i.] of a racetrack, to clients.

Thanks in advance, dear colleagues!

agree  Alice Saunders: absolutely correct!

agree  writeaway: been asked many times before but glossary won't let you search fewer than 3 letters. also been asked on NL site a lot. is Latin in any case-

agree  Alan Tolerton: though normally rendered in English as "acting" or "temporary" - or even "interim", wouldn't you think? One could even stick one's neck out, staying with Latin, and say "pro tem," but I would not accept "ad interim" in English.

Explanation:
There's a big worker's union for administrators in France and Belgium, the Syndicat de l'administration et de l'intendance. A&I. Could be it! Since it's the name of that union, I dont think it should be translated. By the way, intendance means: stewardship.
