"Lorsque le consommateur souhaitera suivre l’exécution de sa commande, exercer son droit de rétraction ou ***actionner la garantie***, il ne devra supporter que les coûts de communications, à l’exclusion de tout coût complémentaire spécifique (article L. 121-19 III du Code de la consommation)."

This is quite straightforward I'm sure, but I just can't seem to phrase it properly. Thanks in advance.

Asker: Doesn't a guarantee automatically apply, it's only when you have a problem that you need your receipt/prrof of purchase etc. to activate the guarantee?

Being very new to ProZ.com (a member for hardly a month) I'm not sure if I'm allowed to answer twice in this way...

But I wonder if 'activate the warranty' isn't a mis-translation. The meaning of the phrase 'activate the warranty' is, at least as I understand it: fill in and send back (via email or post) the warranty form that you received when you bought the product, and then the warranty will become valid.

In contrast, my understanding of the French term 'actionner la garantie' is that this is what you do when it turns out there is a problem with the product you've bought and you have to send it back to the company to get it fixed (under warranty).

I'm perhaps missing something?

si cela peut vous aider à choisir une trad, l'article L. 121-19 III du Code de la consommation (Consumer Code) français - je suppose que c'est de lui qu'il s'agit - n'entrera en vigueur que le 1er juin 08 mais est déjà paru au Journal Officiel.

La version définitive du texte n'utilise pas le mot "actionner" (qui sonne comme un anglicisme en Français) mais "*** mettre en jeu ***" (= mettre en oeuvre).

Je suppose que votre texte, a été rédigé alors que le projet de loi (loi votée le 3 janvier 2008) était encore en discussion, ou bien tente d'expliciter l'article en question.
